Erik Jonsson School Academic Excellence Scholarships
All freshmen admitted for the fall semester are automatically considered for the UTD Academic Excellence Scholarship (AES). Any student who receives a UTD AES award and who enrolls in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science is automatically considered for an Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science (ECS) Academic Excellence Scholarship. This award is worth $500 per semester with the opportunity to renew for up to eight total semesters.
To be eligible for renewal, ECS award recipients must retain their AES award, continue to be ECS majors and make good progress toward graduation in four years. The number of ECS awards will depend on the availability of funds. Merit is the main criterion for selecting recipients, but the guidelines specified by funding sources may give preference to or restrict awards to specific groups (e.g., U.S. citizens/permanent residents).
Erik Jonsson School Transfer Scholarships
UTD has established a new Academic Excellence Scholarship (AES) program for qualified undergraduate transfer students. The scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 per year. Any student who receives a UTD Transfer AES award and who enrolls in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science (ECS) is automatically considered for an ECS Transfer Scholarship. This award is worth $500 per semester for up to two semesters.
To be eligible for renewal, ECS award recipients must retain their AES award, continue to be ECS majors and make good progress toward graduation. The number of awards will depend on availability of funds. Merit is the main criterion for selecting ECS transfer award recipients, but the guidelines specified by funding sources may give preference to or restrict awards to specific groups (e.g., U.S. citizens/permanent residents).
Jonsson School Academic Success Award
The Jonsson School Academic Success Award is offered when funds are available to continuing sophomore, junior and senior students. The scholarship provides up to $2,000 per semester toward a student’s tuition and mandatory fees for a maximum of two semesters, or until graduation. Other scholarships will be considered, and the award amount may be reduced to meet the tuition and fee limit.
Interested students must have completed a minimum of 30 hours of college-level credit hours with a minimum 3.3 GPA, and they must be enrolled full-time toward a degree at the Jonsson School. Important factors in the selection of scholarship recipients include GPA, especially in required courses in engineering and computer science. Positive weight may also be given to the following factors: work experience, community service, extracurricular activities (especially those demonstrating leadership), evidence of having surmounted obstacles to the pursuit of higher education, socioeconomic background and status as a first-generation college student.
Academic Success Award recipients are eligible for other UTD merit scholarships, but the level of the Academic Success Award will be capped at the amount owed for tuition and fees. Over and above the amount provided by the Academic Success Award, however, recipients may receive support from private third-party scholarships and from the Texas valedictorian scholarship. Recipients are also eligible to receive need-based financial aid, both state and federal.
The scholarship application will be available here when this scholarship is activated.
NSF CSEMS Scholarships
The Department of Computer Science and the National Science Foundation’s Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS) program offer one-year scholarships to CS/SE majors. The scholarship provides up to $3,125 per year for qualified students as well as other substantial benefits. The scholarships are both need- and non-need-based. This scholarship can be awarded to students who are already receiving other scholarships or financial aid. Applications from students who would enhance the diversity of the student body are encouraged, especially female, Hispanic and African-American students.
An eligible student must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or refugee alien at the time of application, and he or she must maintain full-time enrollment in UTD’s computer science and/or software engineering bachelor degree program with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above. In addition, students applying for the need-based scholarships must have a demonstrated financial need (as defined by the U.S. Department of Education to be the difference between the institutional cost of attendance and the estimated family contribution).
To submit an application, download an application form and a recommendation form, or pick up forms at the Office of Undergraduate Advising (ECSS 2.502). Students applying for need-based scholarships must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). These applications are also available from the Financial Aid Office on the lower level of McDermott Library (MC1.304).
Jonsson Distinguished Scholars (Get Doc) Program
This program provides bridge support for graduating seniors in ECS majors who plan to continue their studies at the graduate level in the Jonsson School and are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree. Current support levels include a research assistantship ($2,100 per month) and tuition/fee waiver for a full-time graduate load. Applications are typically collected in early October for students graduating in December and in early March for students graduating in May or August. Students interested in this program should start planning for it at least a year before graduation; participation in the Honors in the Major programs and the Fast Track program is strongly encouraged. Download application.
The Sarah Montgomery Marple Cantrell Memorial Scholarship for Women in Engineering
This scholarship provides support to incoming freshmen who a) seek an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, software engineering or telecommunications engineering and b) demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to female students as long as females are underrepresented in engineering fields. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status. The scholarship amount is $1,000 per long semester for 2008/09, and it is renewable for up to three additional years, provided recipients remain in good standing. Download application.
Third Party Scholarships
Local industry partners periodically provide additional scholarship opportunities to continuing students. When available, these scholarships will be announced via e-mail and posted here.
